A pair of turquoise Adirondack chairs that do two things the classic fixed version cannot: recline, and fold away. The backrest locks at five separate angles, running from fully upright for eating or talking to a maximum of 135 degrees for lying back with your eyes shut, so the chair adapts to the afternoon instead of forcing one posture on it. When the season turns, each chair folds from a 46.5-in deep footprint down to a flat 30-in by 10-in by 44-in slab, thin enough that two of them lean together against a wall or slide behind a door rather than taking up a corner all winter. Comfort is built in rather than added with cushions: the backrest is tall enough to support the head, the armrests are widened to take a forearm properly, the seat is contoured across its 20-in by 18-in area, and the whole back is slatted so air moves through instead of trapping heat against your shirt. A cup holder measuring 3.5-in across swivels on the arm so a drink stays level and within reach at any recline angle. Each chair is moulded from HIPS with a wood grain texture, which is sun-protective and anti-fading and needs only a wipe of the smooth surface to look new again. Every chair weighs 34 lb and carries a 330-lb load, and the seat sits 14-in above the ground.
