A lid that stays where you put it is the difference between a storage chest a household can use and one that has to be supervised. Two safety hinges hold the top at whatever angle it is opened to, so it does not fall closed on fingers while somebody is reaching in, which with a board this size is a genuine hazard rather than a theoretical one. The top is rated to 300 lb, which means the chest works as a bench as well as storage. At the foot of a bed, along an entryway wall, or under a window it becomes somewhere to sit, and that rating is far beyond what any seated adult needs. The chest measures 39.4 in wide by 15.7 in deep and stands just over 18 in tall, which is bench height on a footprint that lines a wall without projecting into a room. Particleboard and Mdf construction gives it the substance to stay completely still when sat on. Inside, the hidden compartment takes bedding, toys, tools, or a season of clothing out of sight entirely, which is what a chest does that open shelving cannot.
